Located on the edge of Appalachia, all of the students qualify for free lunches and due to the severity of the opioid epidemic in their county, many children have parents who are either incarcerated or have been incarcerated for drug charges.

A view of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities shows refugee children waiting in large storage-like facilities with no activities to occupy their minds through learning and play while they are being processed. REFORMA implemented a project, Children in Crisis, in 2014 to solicit donations, purchase and deliver books for these children who are largely from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. This task force is made up of Spanish speaking and bilingual/bicultural librarians who can help library staff and community members more effectively assist the unaccompanied refugee children who are arriving.

The Jupiter Middle School Girls Book Club

This collaborative group includes experts in health, reading, adolescent librarianship, and mental health. Fifteen girls will meet after school each week to discuss books that they’re reading. The girls come from day laborer, migrant worker, or small business families, and most contribute to family income by caring for younger siblings, and maintaining the household. For most of the girls, the books purchased with funds from Believe in Reading will be the first books they have ever owned. For all of them, it will be the first time they will be reading books that they have chosen.
